United Way of Tri-County to Provide Emergency Funds to Assist Residents of Westborough Fountainhead Apartment Complex Fire

United Way to Partner with American Red Cross of Central Massachusetts

Framingham, MA: The United Way of Tri-County, based in Framingham, has announced that it has taken action to provide $50,000 in emergency funds to the American Red Cross of Central Massachusetts. The emergency funds will assist more than 277 residents displaced by a fire in Westborough at the Fountainhead Apartment Complex, which occurred on Saturday, February 18, 2001.

According to United Way of Tri-County President and Chief Professional Officer, Paul L. Mina, "The emergency funds released by our Board of Directors will help Red Cross provide food and clothing vouchers, temporary housing, prescription replacements and other forms of service such as mental health counseling." Mina said, "While the United Way provides year-round assistance to Westborough residents through our member agencies, it was critical for us to respond to this situation immediately and with appropriate resources."

Margery Piercey, United Way's Board Chairperson, concurs with Mina. "The United Way of Tri-County's role in the community is to be responsive to community needs," she said. "Our ability to help our Westborough neighbors during this crisis is just one way in which we can demonstrate our commitment to building stronger communities... one family at a time."

Speaking on behalf of the American Red Cross of Central Massachusetts, Lisa Piehler-Jones, Executive Director said, "On behalf of the entire Board of Directors and paid and volunteer staff, I thank the United Way of Tri-County for their generous support. This funding will help our organization provide emergency assistance to hundreds of clients when they are most in need."

The American Red Cross of Central Massachusetts is one of 100 United Way of Tri-County agencies that provide health and human services throughout the United Way's 38-community jurisdiction. This past year nearly 6,300 Westborough residents received help from United Way of Tri-County agencies.
