Sovereign Bank Customers/Employees Donate Over $2,900,000 To American Red Cross September 11 Relief Efforts

Worcester, MA , November 15, 2001-- John Hamill, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Sovereign Bank New England Division will be recognized tonight at the American Red Cross of Central Massachusetts Annual Major Donor Reception.. The reception will be held at Mechanics Hall in Worcester at 5:30 p.m. Sovereign Bank, its employees, and customers have contributed over $2,900,000 to the Red Cross' relief efforts following the September 11th tragedy.

The event will also recognize individuals, schools, corporations and organizations from the Central Massachusetts region who have donated $1000 or more annually to the American Red Cross. The reception is chaired by Red Cross Board Member Kelsa Fuller, of the Childrens Friend Society and will be hosted by Lisa Piehler- Jones, Executive Director and the Board of Directors of the American Red Cross of Central Massachusetts. David McLaughlin, Chairman of the American Red Cross Board of Governors, Washington, DC will be the Key-note Speaker for the evening.

"The American Red Cross is pleased to have the opportunity to extend our gratitude to everyone who has helped the Red Cross prevent, prepare for, and respond to disasters throughout the nation and the world over the past year," said Lisa Piehler-Jones, Executive Director of the American Red Cross of Cnetral Massachusetts. "We are honored to have the support of Sovereign Bank and the hundreds of additional major donors who have joined the Red Cross family as Clara Barton Society Members with financial and in-kind contributions of $1,000 or more."

The reception was made possible through the generosity of a group of donors who are underwriting this event, including Brown & Brown, LLP, Carlin Charron and Rosen LLP, Mirick O'Connell and Cutler Associates. Catering services and audio-visual support were generously provided by Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Entertainment will be provided by the WPI Jazz Ensemble.
