Girl Scouts Get Prepared, Get Involved!

Through the collaborating efforts of the American Red Cross of Central Massachusetts and the Girl Scouts of Montachusett, Inc., there are many opportunities for girl scouts to become involved in helping our Red Cross Chapter carry on our humanitarian mission throughout our community.

Please find below information for completing both the "Together We Prepare" and "Project Take Action" patches. Contact Sue Swanberg (swanbergs@usa.redcross.org, 508-595-3710) to arrange a tour of your local Red Cross and learn about our humanitarian mission!

"Together We Prepare" Patch Program

Life is full of unpredictable events and situations, but you can take steps to prepare for them. The five action steps of this patch will help each girl to prepare for the unexpected, no matter its type, shape or size. Make a Plan – Build a Kit – Get Trained - Volunteer – Give Blood (or help others give blood): find patch completion requirements for Brownies, Juniors and STUDIO 2B Scouts here. Have fun while you learn!

"Project Take Action" Patch Program

There are many ways the Girl Scouts can work with the Red Cross to provide valuable, often life-saving, services to our community. Below is a list of available projects for Daisies, Brownies, Juniors and STUDIO 2B Scouts to choose from. Help save a life today! For complete instructions or questions on individual projects e-mail Sue Swanberg: swanbergs@usa.redcross.org or call 508-595-3710.

DAISIES:
Save a Life through the Mail

Brighten someone’s day while providing important life-saving information! Fill colorful envelopes that you design with health and safety information from the Red Cross. Send these mailers to family and friends.

BROWNIES:
Comfort Kit for Tots Assembly

Troops have the opportunity to collect soap, shampoo, combs, toothbrushes and toothpaste, crayons, face cloths and additional toiletries to pack in a small plastic tote boxes. Many include a personalized anonymous message for the young disaster clients from the troops.

Teddy Bear Collection Drive
Warm the hearts of young disaster clients by donating new teddy bears to distribute on the scene of local house fires. Each troop can personalize the bears with a ribbon message of hope tied around the bear’s neck.

JUNIORS:
Quilts! Stitches of Compassion

Junior troops create lap-top quilts for our youngest disaster clients. Each girl designs her own square to form an adorable quilt which will bring joy to the eyes of the children who will receive something both new and handmade from their friends in our community.

First Aid Kit Collection/Assembly
Troops are assigned First Aid Item(s) to collect. When all items are collected, your troop assembles them into complete kits. The kits are then distributed to people in your community. Everyone gets involved in this project!

Halloween "Ghoulie Bags"
The Red Cross offers safety tips for Halloween and trick-or-treating. Distribute these tips to youth by enclosing them in fun ghoulie bag.

Heart Healthy Valentines
Design Valentines for distribution in your community. Include tips for a healthy heart to show that you really care. Your Valentines can be given to local veterans, senior citizens and people who are homebound.

STUDIO 2B (ages 11-14):
Change your Clock, Change Your Batteries!

When you change your clocks in spring and fall, you should also change the batteries in your smoke detectors! Troops assemble kits containing batteries and fire safety information to be distributed to the community.

First Aid Kit Collection/Assembly
See description above under "Juniors".

STUDIO 2B (ages 14-17):
Youth/Peer Disaster Education

Older Scouts have the opportunity to train to teach their peers and younger scouts about key preparedness messages including Family Disaster Plans, Family Communications Plans, Weather Emergencies and How to Build a Disaster Supply Kit.

Host a Blood Drive
Each day, thousands of patients need blood. By giving and collecting blood regularly we ensure that there is always enough!
