'53 Tornado Victim Returns $7,500 Gift to Red Cross

Donation to Support Local Relief Efforts

Worcester, MA - The American Red Cross of Central Massachusetts will accept a $7500 donation on Tuesday morning from 1953 Tornado survivor Gustaf Andrew Karlson and his family at the Chapter’s new corporate headquarters, the Remillard Building.

The $7,500 contribution represents the dollar amount given to the Karlson family two weeks after the devastating tornado swept their home away in June of 1953. When the Karlsons were able to return to their Brattle Street home to survey the damage on that fateful day, they were faced with nothing but an empty foundation and a single water pipe. With two of their oldest children in the hospital, and no home to return to, the family was left helpless.

Mr. Karlson first turned to his insurance company, from whom he had previously requested and received maximum homeowner’s coverage. He learned they would not be able to provide any assistance due to the fact that the word “wind” was not included in the policy. He next turned to his bank. They were quick to turn him away too, as they had just lost a number of homes in the North Worcester area as well. Karlson turned to his last hope, the American Red Cross who in turn granted him $7,500 to rebuild his home.

Fifty two years later, Donna Karlson, daughter of Gustaf, has again reached out to the local Chapter. Her father, now in his 90’s wants to give back to those who saved his family and helped them to rebuild their home. The family, now living throughout Massachusetts and Maine will gather in Worcester once again, to return the $7,500 given to them years ago.

“On Tuesday, I will stand in front of the American Red Cross to offer them a check, a donation, in the amount they afforded me decades ago,” stated Gustaf “Andrew” Karlson. “I feel humble. I feel so small, but it is my attempt, feeble as it seems, to pay back the Red Cross of Central Massachusetts- a blessed American institution.”

This year, the American Red Cross of Central Massachusetts is celebrating 100 years of service to the citizens of central Massachusetts. Chartered in November of 1905, the mission of the American Red Cross carries on with the help of over 700 volunteers who selflessly donate their time to help the people in their community prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies.

“Words can not describe the emotions that are attached to this contribution,” stated Nicole Valentine, spokeswoman for the American Red Cross of Central Massachusetts.

“When we received the call from Donna, our staff was overwhelmed. Andrew Karlson’s gift is a true testament to the work of our dedicated volunteers and the countless hours they dedicate to their neighbors in need. I couldn’t have imagined a better gift as we celebrate our centennial year!”

If you would like to make a donation to help fund the local disaster relief program in honor of Mr. Karlson, you may make an on line donation, or you may send a check (with a notation) to the American Red Cross of Central Massachusetts, 2000 Century Drive, Worcester, MA 01606. Thank you for your generosity.
