Girl Scouts and American Red Cross Taking Action

Roughly two hundred Brownie Girl Scouts gathered on Sunday, May 20th at the American Red Cross office on Harvard Street in Worcester to celebrate the completion of a three month long community service project to benefit the American Red Cross. Called "Project Take Action," Brownie Girl Scouts, (ages 6-8), from throughout central Massachusetts have been gathering trial sized soaps, shampoos, toothbrushes, toothpaste and other such items to fill American Red Cross "Comfort Kits." These kits are given to people who have just experienced a disaster such as a house fire. Project Take Action is the pilot project for the recent collaboration between the American Red Cross of Central Massachusetts and the Montachusett Girl Scout Council. The program was designed by a committee made up of staff members and volunteers from both organizations in an effort to teach the girls about the importance of community service.

In the fall, all age levels of Girl Scouts from throughout Central Massachusetts will participate in Project Take Action. Girls will collect a variety of items for the American Red Cross like school backpacks, teddy bears and quilts. Cadette and Senior Girl Scouts, (ages 11-17) will take part in childcare and disaster education training.

"The American Red Crossed is honored to be working with the Girl Scouts on this special project," said Lisa Piehler-Jones, Executive Director of the American Red Cross of Central Massachusetts. "The project will not only benefit the troops as they learn the value of community service, it will also allow the Red Cross to provide comfort kits to hundreds of disaster clients right here in Central Massachusetts."
