Local Red Cross Volunteers Offer Mutual Aid to West Warwick Rhode Island Fire Victims

Worcester, MA February 21, 2003 - Volunteers from the American Red Cross of Central Massachusetts are on the scene of the tragic night club fire in West Warwick providing assistance to the American Red Cross of Rhode Island. Two local licensed mental health counselors responded early this morning and are providing grief counseling. In addition, volunteers are providing canteen services for emergency workers and others utilizing the Central Massachusetts ERV (Emergency Response Vehicle).

An information hotline has been set up to assist family members who are trying to locate immediate relatives. If you are trying to locate an immediate relative who is missing, contact 1-401-462-7111.

One of the best ways to provide hope and help victims of this and other disasters is to donate blood. To find out about the nearest blood drive call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE or contact the Blood Donor Center at Biotech #5 in Worcester at 508-791-7444. A full schedule of local blood drives can also be viewed on www.redcrossworcester.org.

All American Red Cross disaster assistance is free, made possible by voluntary donations of time and money from the American people. You can help victims of the West Warwick disaster and thousands of other disasters across the country each year by making a financial gift to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, which enables the Red Cross to provide shelter, food, counseling and other assistance to those in need. Call 1-800-HELP NOW or 1-800-257-7575 (Spanish). Contributions to the Disaster Relief Fund may be sent to your local American Red Cross chapter or to the American Red Cross, PO Box 37243, Washington, DC 20013. Internet users can make a secure on-line contribution by visiting www.redcross.org.
