Red Cross Continues Relief Effort to Fountain Head Fire Victims - Service Center Now Open

Worcester, MA, February 19, 2001 - As the American Red Cross of Central Massachusetts enters the third day of relief efforts for the residents of the Fountain Head Apartments, the Chapter continues the process of identifying all individuals who are in need of emergency assistance.

The shelter located at the Gibbons Middle School was closed at 8:00 p.m. last night after temporary housing had been found for approximately 50 individuals who were registered in the shelter as of yesterday afternoon. Over 60 Red Cross volunteers have worked in shifts around the clock conducting damage assessments of the 164 occupied apartments, and operating the emergency shelter. To date, over 400 meals have been served.

An American Red Cross Service Center has been opened today at the Fountain Head Apartment Complex next to the Rental Office. The Service Center will be open from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. tonight and will reopen again tomorrow from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Any individuals who have been displaced by the fire and are in need of emergency assistance are encouraged to report to the service center to open a case file with the American Red Cross of Central Massachusetts.

The American Red Cross of Central Massachusetts is collaborating with the United Way of Tri-County to meet the emergency needs of all individuals displaced by Saturday's Fire. Standard forms of Red Cross emergency assistance may include disbursing orders for the purchase of food, clothing, shelter, emergency medical supplies for items such as eye glass and dentures, essential household furnishings, and other emergency needs. All Red Cross disaster relief is free, given as an outright gift from the American people.
