Red Cross Responds to Fountain Head Fire
300 Residents Displaced
Worcester, MA, February 18, 2001 - Fifty Disaster trained volunteers from the American Red Cross of Central Massachusetts worked in shifts overnight to provide canteen service to over 150 emergency workers on the scene and staff an emergency shelter for the victims of the Fountain Head Apartment Fire. Over 300 residents were displaced.
Red Cross volunteers conducted the initial registration process of individuals from over 170 apartments at the In-Sports Complex on Otis St. in Northboro. Clients were then transported to an overnight shelter located at the Westboro Senior Center, where forty-five individuals spent the night.
The American Red Cross of Central Massachusetts will relocate the residents to a shelter at the Gibbons Middle School, Otis St., Westboro by noon-time today. This is a larger facility with showers and the amount of space needed to accommodate the needs of the residents of the building who will not be able to return to their apartments tonight.
Residents who were displaced by yesterday's fire and are in need of temporary shelter are encouraged to report to the shelter at the Gibbons School this afternoon, or to call the American Red Cross at 508-756-5711.
To help the victims of this and other disasters, please send your financial contribution to the American Red Cross of Central Massachusetts, Local Disaster Relief Fund, 61 Harvard St., Worcester, MA 01609.
