The American Red Cross Needs You - Make A Resolution to Volunteer in 2001, The International Year of Volunteers(Worcester, MA) January 4, 2001 - Every day, American Red Cross volunteers provide essential services to the people in their communities. Here in Central Massachusetts, local Red Cross volunteers teach children how to swim, help a family with a disaster, empower people with the skills they need to save a life and help people give the gift of life at a blood drive. Without the dedication of these volunteers, many of the services that the American Red Cross provides in communities across the country would not be available. In recognition of the valuable community service work performed by volunteers around the world, the United Nations General Assembly has declared the year 2001 as the International Year of Volunteers (IYV 2001). "As we enter 2001, I encourage everyone to make a resolution to volunteer," said Lisa Piehler-Jones, Executive Director of the American Red Cross of Central Massachusetts. "Your local Red Cross can provide the training you need to help your community. The personal satisfaction gained from volunteering is the greatest gift," she said. While most families were together enjoying the holiday season, American Red Cross disaster relief workers could be found helping families across the country who have lost their homes to disaster. From tornado victims in Alabama and Mississippi to numerous local fires in Worcester, Southbridge, and Dudley, Red Cross workers left their own families to help others in their time of need. Locally, Red Cross volunteers have made a positive impact on the community in the last year by providing emergency relief to over 350 disaster clients on the scene of 53 separate incidents. "Around the world and in your neighborhood, volunteers provide invaluable service to their communities, sometimes despite personal hardship," continued Ms. Piehler Jones. "The American Red Cross is proud to support the International Year of Volunteers because we can not thank our volunteers enough for their hard work and dedication." More volunteers are needed at the American Red Cross of Central Massachusetts as the number of programs and services offered to the community grow, and the number of local disasters continue to climb during the winter season. Volunteer opportunities include, receptionist positions, office support, community educators, CPR and First Aid Instructors and disaster relief workers. "As we enter the new year, our need for additional volunteers is growing rapidly," said Piehler-Jones. "Whether it is a couple of hours a week or a few days a month, you can make a difference in the lives of your neighbors in need."
