Recent College Grads Lead the Way as Volunteers

Caitlin Bonadies, is a 2008 Worcester State College graduate and intern extraordinaire in the Emergency Services Department. In addition to completing her undergraduate studies in Health Science (BS), Caitlin holds down a job as a Sales Lead Manager at Express in the Auburn mall, and volunteers at the Red Cross 20 hours per week. Caitlin took the lead on the Shelter Survey project - scheduling the site visits, compiling the data, managing the teams that assisted her on the site visits, and completing the database work. Feedback from the emergency managers/fire departments as well as her co-volunteers has been enormously positive. Caitlin has assisted with client casework and worked with the Development Team on such events as the Great Golf Ball Drop. Caitlin is also a certified First Aid and CPR Instructor and will be teaching classes at the Chapter soon. Caitlin aspires to become a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner and is in the process of applying for graduate programs that will begin in January. In the little free time Caitlin has for fun she enjoys working-out, running, shopping and going to the beach.

Nate Malatesta graduated from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in May of 2007 with a degree in mechanical engineering. Upon graduation Nate was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. Starting in November 2008, Nate plans to attend Undergraduate Flight School at Columbus AFB, Mississippi. NateÕs flight training will take approximately three years and he then looks forward to a long career with the USAF. While biding his time until November, Nate is volunteering with the American Red Cross of Central Massachusetts and also taking care of his younger siblings. Nate is enjoying spending time with the kids this summer visiting, among other places, The Southwick Zoo, KimballÕs and Six Flags. At the Chapter, Nate has completed a variety of tasks Ð shelter surveys, yard care, vacuuming the cars, inventory, etc. He also plans to get as much Disaster Response Training under his belt as possible and hopes to get out on some Disaster calls. In the future, Nate plans to continue volunteering with the American Red Cross wherever the Air Force takes him.

The future of volunteerism at the American Red Cross is bright when we know that young adults such as Caitlin and Nate are leading the way!
